In 1934 Berlin, two lovers are thrown on a train to Dachau as part of the Gestapo's plan to cleanse the city of "perverts." One denies his lover at the hands of the guards, but while at the camp, he learns that true dignity lies in acknowledging who he is. "Bent" is an award-winning WWII drama written by Martin Sherman that tracks the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany. The play is historically important because before "Bent" was first staged in London in 1979, there was little awareness of Nazi treatment of homosexuals. With its potent statement, the play has helped increase historical research and education of their abuse.

AFI Silver Theatre presents a screening of Banker White's documentary, "The Genius of Marian". It's a touching portrait of her mother Pam, who is slowly succumbing to the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. The disease had previously affected White's grandmother Marian, a noted artist, so Pam was aware of the importance of preserving a meaningful personal legacy before it is too late. This intimate portrait of a woman at her most vulnerable pays moving tribute to the strong women of one remarkable family.

AFI Silver Theatre presents this stirring 2012 documentary about acclaimed British photojournalist Don McCullin, who escaped a hardscrabble childhood to create many of the most remarkable and venerated images of late-20th century wars. "McCullin" finds a pensive yet vulnerable McCullin looking back on his impressive career with wistful, sometimes haunted memories, reflecting on the essence of war and his ambivalence about documenting horrific events while escaping countless "close calls." Jacqui Morris directs this BAFTA-nominated biographical film about a remarkable man who transformed moments of atrocity into a exultation to shared humanity.

The Keegan Theatre presents David Lindsay-Abaire's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Rabbit Hole". Directed by Kerri Rambow, this moving drama -- at turns both funny and heartbreaking -- tells the story of Becca and Howie, a married couple each coping in different ways after losing their child in a tragic accident. As they drift apart despite their shared grief, their lives are further complicated by Becca's mother and sister, as well as the teenage boy responsible for their son's death. Told with all the humor, conflict and emotion of real life, "Rabbit Hole" depicts five characters growing and changing through realistic, vivid and hopeful interactions. The play received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and Cynthia Nixon won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Becca in the Broadway production. It was nominated for several other Tony Awards, including Best Play.

"Contact Music" called her "the most under-rated artist in the world." "USA Today" gushed that she's produced "some of the decade's most stirring R&B." Artists such as Kanye West, R. Kelly, Busta Rhymes, Common and Fabolous have all lined up to work with her. Her name is Syleena Johnson, and she's one of the most admired and exciting vocalists of her generation.
Contact Music called her "the most under-rated artist in the world." USA Today gushed that she's produced "some of the decade's most stirring R&B." Artists such as Kanye West, R. Kelly, Busta Rhymes, Common and Fabolous have all lined up to work with her. Her name is Syleena Johnson, and she's one of the most admired and exciting vocalists of her generation. Daughter of veteran soul singer Syl Johnson, Syleena's gorgeous voice and natural storytelling instincts have elevated her craft to the highest levels ... and attracted cult-like devotion from fans and critics.
Star-crossed lovers, a banished child, a loyal servant, a clever thief -- all are featured in Shakespeare's roller-coaster ride of jealousy, loss, love and reconciliation "The Winter's Tale", presented by Shakespeare Theatre Company in association with McCarter Theatre Center. One of Shakespeare's late romances, "The Winter's Tale" centers around the jealous King Leontes of Sicilia, who flies into a rage when he believes his pregnant wife Hermione and his good friend King Polixenes are lovers. By the time he discovers the truth, he's lost his wife and two young children. However, years later, a miraculous turn of events brings a chance for redemption. Director Rebecca Taichman, whose "Cymbeline" was hailed as "brimming with both heart and good humor" by the "Washington City Paper" and whose "Twelfth Night" was called "gorgeously romantic" by "The Downtowner", returns to direct this timeless work at the Lansburgh Theatre.

Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits, Jamie Shields of the New Deal, and Mike Greenfield of Lotus banded together ten years ago to form a supergroup to perform "livetronica" -- music that blends jam band elements with electronic music. SuckerPunch has popped up here and there throughout the years and they're back again this summer to play a show at The Howard Theatre. The fact that these groups are part jam band should tell you that it's essential to see them live. Anyone who has seen these musicians with their respective bands knows they kill it live and the jam will just be multiplied when you put them all together.

"Legally Blonde: The Musical" is a bright and bubbly musical based on the hit comedy film about a sorority girl-turned-law student, with a fun and catchy pop score. This humorous yet inspiring tale follows Elle Woods, a typical sorority girl who can't get enough pink in her wardrobe, whose main interests include shoes, shopping and her manicure appointment. But her superficial exterior hides a determined soul with the savvy to get her way and a surprisingly sharp wit. When her boyfriend dumps her for a more intellectual woman, Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. This unlikely academic ends up teaching the intellectual elite a thing or two, and finding true love along the way.

A best-selling author -- his 2008 novel "The Last Patriot" debuted at No. 1 on "The New York Times" Best Seller List -- Thor has also become a highly valued resource on real-world terrorism. His careful research behind thrillers like "The Lions of Lucerne", "Path of the Assassin", "State of the Union/i>, "Blowback" and "Takedown" has led the Department of Homeland Security to consult him on possible terrorist scenarios. Now he is about to release "Hidden Order", the 12th novel in his acclaimed series starring Navy-SEAL-turned-covert-operative Scot Harvath. Listen to this remarkable writer and thinker discuss the process behind his renowned "faction" in a special appearance at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue.

Finn Wittrock ("Death of a Salesman"), Sarah Wayne Callies ("The Walking Dead") and Shuler Hensley ("Oklahoma!") headline this all-new Kennedy Center comedy about the actor-husband in a Brangelina-style supercouple from Budapest. Knowing his wife's reputation for getting restless after six months of a relationship, the actor sets out to seduce her himself before she can stray by pulling off his greatest role -- posing as the latest object of her affection, an imperial guardsman. Richard Nelson, a Tony winner for "James Joyce's The Dead", penned this new translation of Ferenc Molnár's original play. This version, helmed by two-time Tony winner Gregory Mosher, stars Wittrock, who made an award-winning impression as Happy Loman in Mike Nichols' 2012 Broadway production of " Death of a Salesman" with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Callies is best known as the ill-fated Lori Grimes on AMC's hit series "The Walking Dead", while Broadway star Shuler Hensley is a Tony winner for "Oklahoma!", and most recently starred as the monster in the musical "Young Frankenstein", as well as the same character in the thriller "Van Helsing".

"Shock Therapy Tour 2013" brings together shock-rock icons Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson for a night of metal and mayhem at Merriweather Post Pavilion. A larger-than-life performer and master showman, horror-rock legend Alice Cooper combines infectious heavy metal melodies ("School's Out," "I'm Eighteen") with true theatricality in an energetic stage show that often incorporates horror movie imagery, stage blood and more. Known as much for his music as his controversial stage persona, Marilyn Manson found worldwide commercial success with a string of chart-topping hits, including "The Beautiful People," "The Dope Show" and a brooding cover of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." Throughout the '90s and into the new millennium, Manson has helped bring shocking imagery, anti-establishment lyrics and outlandish costumes into the mainstream. Costumed shock-rock veterans GWAR open the show.

Playwright Alan Bennett scoured the entire history of England for material for award-winning plays like "The Madness of King George III", "The History Boys" and "Talking Heads". But for "The Lady in the Van", Bennett only had to look down the driveway. Inspired by a homeless eccentric who moved her van into Bennett's garden and stayed there for nearly two decades, "The Lady in the Van" examines how a writer's life (and the people in it) can quickly become the subject of a writer's work. Unexpected Stage, energized from such celebrated productions as "Candy and Dorothy" and "The Dumb Waiter" returns to the Randolph Road Theater to present a play brimming with the wit and insight of one of the most celebrated playwrights alive today.

Three DC-area dance companies -- Ballet ADI, Christopher K. Morgan & Artists and Dance Exchange -- examine notions of self and place through movement in this thrilling triple-bill at the American Dance Institute. "Distant Memories", a new ballet from Ballet ADI Director Runqiao Du, is a meditation on Du's departure of China as a teenager to his recent trip back with his family as an adult. Christopher K. Morgan & Artists' "Place Names" explores how names, language and labels can shape one's identity. And "To the Edge", a new work created by Dance Exchange in collaboration with Summer Institute participants, explores the edges of our built and natural environment, and how our own edges relate, respond and react to the places through which we travel. Also on the program, Christopher K. Morgan will present the world premiere of a currently untitled solo by renowned choreographer Christian Von Howard.

Scott Patterson is known to Forum Theatre audiences as the music director and onstage chorus of their current production, "Clementine in the Lower 9". Updating the Greek tragedy of "Agamemnon" to a post-Katrina New Orleans setting, the show is punctuated by Patterson's jazz and blues piano as he plays the part of a modernized Greek chorus for the show. After this Friday evening performance, Patterson will stick around for a special one-night concert performance featuring his original compositions. His unique blend of classic, soul, and rock take music to the next level, representing a wave of the future in composition.
