The Old Globe performs "The Recommendation", a world premiere play by Jonathan Caren, one of America's most exciting up-and-coming playwrights. Aaron is smart, privileged and liked by everyone. Iskinder, his college roommate, is modest, unconnected and comes from a middle-class immigrant family. Soon the best of friends, Aaron takes Iskinder under his wing, sharing his world of favors and fortune. But the safe haven of college only lasts so long, and once in the real world, Aaron is thrust into a terrifying situation without his familiar safety net. As the tables turn and he is forced to rely on an accused felon's connections to keep him safe, both Aaron and Iskinder have to rethink the meaning of friendship and where loyalty has its limits.

Take a trip down memory lane with hit musical revue "The Marvelous Wonderettes". This popular favorite journeys back to a 1958 prom at Springfield High School (and its subsequent 10-year reunion). When the evening's scheduled entertainment doesn't show, the Wonderettes take the stage for the performance of a lifetime, with dreams and voices as big as their crinoline skirts. Together, Cindy Lou, Missy, Betty Jean and Suzy sing pop classics like "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me," "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)," "Stupid Cupid," "Dream Lover," "Lollipop" and more. San Diego Musical Theatre's production includes the New York cast of Misty Cotton, Beth Malone, Bets Malone and Lowe Taylor.

City Ballet of San Diego presents "Bravo! Balanchine", featuring three pieces by George Balanchine. "Who Cares?", set to the music of George Gershwin. The piece portrays the exuberance of America and of Manhattan, in particular. "Agon" is a ballet for twelve dancers, with music by Igor Stravinsky. This storyless piece features pairs, trios and quartets of dancers interacting, with several of the dances inspired by 17th-century French court dances. Finally, "Donizetti Variations" is a cheerful, sunny piece originally created for New York City Ballet's celebration of the 100th anniversary of Italy's unification.

Everyone has a story to tell, and some of the most compelling stories come from those who are either just starting out in life, or those who are looking back on a long life full of rich experiences. Playwrights Project taps into those two groups of unsung writers with a festival of plays showcasing the works of young writers and senior wordsmiths. Plays by Young Writers will feature winning scripts from the California Young Playwrights Contest, written by playwrights ages 12-18. Selected from 333 contest submissions, two scripts will be presented as full productions and two as staged readings. As a separate show presented in rotation, Lifestages Reflections will be the first full production of scripts by writers from the Recollections playwriting program for ages 55+. Using a variety of voices, the stories will capture key moments in a person's life, including childbirth, the loss of a spouse, and growing up in the Great Depression.

Tommy Emmanuel, voted Best Acoustic Guitarist in "Guitar Player" magazine's 2010 Reader's Choice Awards, and star of a 2011 PBS special recorded live on this very stage, returns for another exciting evening of virtuoso guitar playing. A two-time Grammy nominee, the Australian Emmanuel uses an uncommon ten-fingered style -- known as Travis picking -- first popularized by the legendary Chet Atkins, who counts himself as among Emmanuel's greatest fans. Atkins even named Emmanuel a Certified Guitar Player, one of only a handful ever to receive that honor. He's also played alongside greats like Eric Clapton and Les Paul. Don't miss this amazing musician's live performance, recommended for everyone age 6 and older.

Virtuoso Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel Returns to Balboa Theatre

Balboa Theatre (San Diego, CA)

Tommy Emmanuel, voted Best Acoustic Guitarist in Guitar Player magazine's 2010 Reader's Choice Awards, and star of a 2011 PBS special recorded live on this very stage, returns for another exciting evening of virtuoso guitar playing. Learn more...

With "Vive La France", this unique violin octet celebrates French speaking culture around the globe. The Hutchins Consort performs plays on eight scaled violins from the tiny treble violin, tuned one octave above the standard violin, to the large bass violin, tuned one octave lower than a cello. This broad palette of instruments helps the ensemble produce an astonishing range. This program will feather the orld premiere of Bataillie's "Trout Swimming Upstream", Boieldieu "Harp Concerto", featuring Elena Mashkovtseva, Ravel's Tzigane "Pavane for a Dead Princess" and an array of Haitian and Tahitian songs that will transport you to the islands.

Together, Cindy Lou, Missy, Betty Jean and Suzy sing pop classics like "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me," "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)," "Stupid Cupid," "Dream Lover," "Lollipop" and more.

This bitingly humorous 2010 play from San Diego Rep and Lisa Kron, the writer of 2006's Tony Award-nominated and Obie-winning "Well" and "2.5 Minute Ride", tells the story of Ellen, a journalist struggling to cope with her changing beliefs about politics and love. Set in the years 2000 to 2005 and covering events from George W. Bush's contested election to 9/11, the decision to invade Iraq and Bush's re-election, journalist Ellen (Aubrey Saverino) reveals herself to be a vocal and committed member of the liberal left. But when no one in her tight circle -- consisting of her adoring boyfriend, her exciting new lover Amy, her world-weary friend Judy and others -- reacts similarly to current events, Ellen is forced to confront a blind spot in her thinking about the world, and more importantly, about herself.

The New Village Arts Ensemble presents the shortest and most farcical of Shakespeare's comedies. "The Comedy of Errors" takes twin masters each named Antipholus, their twin servants both inconveniently named Dromio, and puts them together in the same city for the first time, setting off a chain of mistaken identity mishaps. The New Village Arts Theatre is a popular local venue. This intimate gem features great acoustics, professional-quality talent and not a bad seat in the house. Audiences are invited to stay for a talkback with the ensemble after each performance.

The New Village Arts Ensemble presents the shortest and most farcical of Shakespeare's comedies. The Comedy of Errors takes twin masters each named Antipholus, their twin servants both inconveniently named Dromio, and puts them together in the same city for the first time, setting off a chain of mistaken identity mishaps. The New Village Arts Theatre is a popular local venue. This intimate gem features great acoustics, professional-quality talent and not a bad seat in the house. Audiences are invited to stay for a talkback with the ensemble after each performance. Learn more...

The first play written by an African American ever to be produced on Broadway, Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" "changed American theater forever," according to "The New York Times". Moxie Theatre gives the show its full due with a powerhouse cast, including Mark Christopher Lawrence who plays Big Mike on NBC's "Chuck", and members of the award-winning ensembles from Cygnet Theatre's productions of "Fences" and "The Piano Lesson". Well known to film viewers from the 1961 movie starring Sidney Poitier, "A Raisin in the Sun" is the story of the Youngers, an African-American family living on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. Faced with a $10,000 inheritance, the family -- accustomed to struggling to make ends meet -- tries to decide the best way to spend the money. As they consider a new home, investment in a business, college tuition and more, they face the challenges of unexpected pregnancy, a marriage proposal, and a heartbreaking theft. Through it all, they never give up hope of the American dream.

Fronted by talented singer and star-in-the-making Rachael Price, Boston-bred quartet Lake Street Dive seems on the brink of break-out acclaim. Along with Tennessee native Price, drummer Mike Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney and trumpeter-guitarist Mike "McDuck" Olson -- all former students at Boston's New England Conservatory -- craft the band's unique sound, which combines elements of classic pop with jazz, soul and even rock. For this show at Queen Bees, they'll share the stage with opener Josh Damigo, a singer-songwriter who has played with the likes of Jason Mraz, Joss Stone, Shawn Colvin and the Zac Brown Band, among others.
