Renowned author T. Coraghessan Boyle has penned 22 novels, many of which probe the relationship between contemporary human civilization and the natural world. His latest work, "When the Killing's Done", adopts as its setting California's geographically isolated Channel Islands and gives a harrowing fictional account of the battle that ensues when two ideologically opposed environmentalists disagree over the fate of the islands' species. Much like Boyle's previous novels, including the best-selling "The Tortilla Curtain" and "The Women", his newest book combines suspenseful narrative and strong characterization with provocative questions about society's role in, and responsibility to, the world in which we live. Boyle takes the stage at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club to share his thoughts on the making and implications of this powerful book.

Detailing stories of feuding tailors, a cocaine-addicted rabbi, the Israeli-Palestine conflict and a Jewish woman who joins a fundamentalist Christian sect through a guitar and a piano would seem to be an impossibly difficult task, but singer-songwriter Daniel Cainer is up to the challenge. His "Jewish Chronicles" has been a smashing success in London, Edinburgh, New York and Sydney thanks to his deft storytelling ability and sometimes poignant, but often humorous, songs. You'll laugh, cry and thrill to this one-man masterpiece.

His Jewish Chronicles has been a smashing success in London, Edinburgh, New York and Sydney thanks to his deft storytelling ability and sometimes poignant, but often humorous, songs. You'll laugh, cry and thrill to this one-man masterpiece. Learn more...

Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, "Incendies", and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, "Scorched" makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn ("Good Night, and Good Luck") as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search.

The global smash stage musical by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus tells the story of a mother, a daughter, three possible dads, and an unforgettable trip down the aisle. Bride-to-be Sophie wants nothing more than to have her father at her wedding. But there's a problem -- she has no idea which of mom Donna's three former boyfriends might be the guy -- so she invites them all to the festivities, surprising her fiercely independent mom and Donna's two best gal pals. The show's tale of enduring love and friendship features the fabulous hit songs "Dancing Queen," "S.O.S.," "The Winner Takes It All," "Take a Chance on Me" and the title tune. This North American tour comes as the production celebrates its 10th year on Broadway and a top-grossing movie adaptation that starred Meryl Streep -- but there's nothing like seeing it live on stage.

ODC/Dance, San Francisco's internationally acclaimed contemporary dance company, presents its spring season with three new works: "Breathing Underwater", by ODC Founder and Artistic Director Brenda Way, is a dance for four women set to live music by popular avant cellist and composer Zoe Keating, well known for using a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of sound. "Cut Out Guy", by ODC Co-Artistic Director KT Nelson, is a work for five male dancers featuring music by experimental composer Ben Frost, exploring the relationship between internal and external self. Nelson's "Transit", in collaboration with San Francisco bicycle artist Max Chen, is a full-company work celebrating the chaotic pulse of our urban centers. Three additional works round out the season: "Raking Light" (2002), choreographed by Brenda Way, along with her "Part of a Longer Story" (2006), choreographed over seven years and set to Mozart's concerto for clarinet and orchestra. ODC Associate Choreographer Kimi Okada's work, "I look vacantly at the Pacific...though regret" (2011) completes the set. The season is broken into two programs showcasing different performances.

Former music director Edo de Waart returns to perform with the San Francisco Symphony for the first time since 1997. The evening begins with an introduction to the music of Franz Schreker, an Austrian opera composer whose music combines the stylistic traits of several artistic movements and whose immersive scores are cinematic in their ability to draw the listener into the story. This innovative and once-obscure composer has seen a revival in popularity in recent years. The program also includes Rachmaninoff's sophisticated and modern Fourth Piano Concerto and the thundering Organ Symphony of Camille Saint-Saëns, his last and most dramatic symphonic work.

Playwright-director Aaron Henne's world-premiere play at Center Works, "Mesmeric Revelation ... after Edgar Allan Poe", is inspired by that author's 1844 short story, and dramatizes the era's historic clash between science and mysticism. Two of the most famed men in Paris, Antoine Lavoisier, known as the Father of Modern Chemistry, and Dr. Anton Mesmer, "the Wizard of Vienna," meet and clash over Mesmer's claim that he cures ill patients by placing them in trance-like states. Henne's intriguing new work stars Theo Black and Joe Jordan.

Sam Shepard's Pulitzer Prize-winning examination of the American dream, "Buried Child", follows the lives of a family wrecked by the secret tragedy that haunts them. Vince brings his girlfriend to meet his grandparents, but his expectations turn to disillusionment as he faces the reality of his quirky, often frightening, family of antagonists contained in a claustrophobic farmhouse somewhere in the great American Midwest. This powerful production is part of Boxcar's tribute to Sam Shepherd, as this season they feature a series of Shepherd plays as well as readings and selected scenes from the playwright in the month of March.

Weekends are for relaxing and rejuvenating, and San Francisco Sailing Company offers the perfect way to do that. Climb aboard a sailboat for a two-hour cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge. Along the way, enjoy two complimentary drinks, such as champagne, mimosas, beer, white wine or soda. You'll depart from pier 39 at 10am, when sailing is the smoothest and warmest. Along the way to Golden Gate Bridge, you'll cruise past Fisherman's Wharf, Aquatic Park, Fort Mason, the Marina District, Crissy Field, and Fort Point. You'll be right under the Golden Gate Bridge for the 11:00 champagne toast. The return journey through the central bay and around Alcatraz Island will offer magnificent views of the cityfront, Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, Angel Island, Alcatraz, Oakland and the Bay Bridge. The peace and serenity of this weekend sail will stay with you throughout the week to come.

Alt-comedy diva Desiree Burch, named one of "New York" magazine's "Ten New Comedians that Funny People Find Funny," presents her salacious and side-splitting solo show, "52 Man Pick Up". A hit at the Edinburgh, New York and Hollywood Fringe Festivals, this exuberant mix of riffs, rants, anecdotes, audience participation, uproarious comedy and devastating poetry is sure to hit home in the Bay Area as well. Burch has an entertaining tale of intimate encounters for every card in the deck, and her engaging mix of lush language, a brash stage persona and quirky perspective draws audiences in to her true-to-life tales of sex in the city.

Chef/owner of the renowned Prune restaurant in New York City, Hamilton traces her unconventional journey to the top of the culinary food chain with prickly honesty and humor. The story starts out at a rural Pennsylvania farm watching her elegant French mother prepare meals, continues through a rough adolescence in New York, an eye-opening trip to Europe and beyond, which ingrained in her the link between cooking, comfort and kindness.

His play "The Twenty-Seventh Man", based on a story from his first book, will premiere at New York's The Public Theater this year. He joins the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco at Fisher Family Hall to discuss his new book, "What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank", eight short stories that grapple with the great questions of modern life.

A punk attitude, female Pirate King, chainsaws, rock music, pointed political satire, and more make this updated version of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera fiercer and funnier than its ever been. Set in a post-atomic future, the story of Frederic, who is mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates as a boy, features plenty of romance and swashbuckling action, in this re-imagining by director Jon Tracy and the Berkeley Playhouse crew.

Learn more...
